SURI (Exclusive Interview): Empowering Underprivileged Mothers Through Sewing & Handcrafts

Based in a community area of Sg Udang, Klang, SURI aims to give back to the community and empowers underprivileged mothers with a reliable, genuine source of income. 

And.. you guessed it right!

Sewing and handcrafting wonderful products out of up-cycled denim materials make it possible.

They aspire to develop a social impact through these amazing hand skills.

It goes beyond aiding these mothers and their families, SURI gives a chance for them to have their own space for growth and recollect themselves for a whole betterment.

SURI is a business that is socially driven to create self-reliance and a better living for this community of underprivileged mothers.

Over here at Sterrific, we are lucky enough to score an interview with them. We asked them several questions and these are what they have in store for all of us!

Q1. The idea that sparked behind SURI

A:

The idea of SURI came about when our Founder, Sally attended a creative sewing class which involved the participants to make products out of up-cycled materials

That’s where the initial idea of our product to be made out of up-cycled denim materials came about.

Whilst, our social impact came much later when my mom and I joined a program under MaGIC which sparks the possibility of combining both of the elements together to start a business out of it. 

A business that is socially driven for the betterment of our underprivileged community of mothers. 

Q2. Behind the name, SURI

SURI

A:

SURI is the abbreviation for Single Mum, Recreative & Innovative. 

Also, SURI in Bahasa Malaysia means, mothers/ queens.

Q3. Their definition of SURI, if people were to ask about it

SURI is the empowerment of underprivileged mothers by providing sewing skills and financial/ employment opportunities by handcrafting sustainable products out of up-cycled denim materials.

Q4. Target market

A:

Our target market is to those who are socially and environmentally conscious, as well as fashion conscious consumers that are looking for rarity in their daily looks.

Q5. Their way of marketing SURI’s products

A:

We promote our products through the channels of social media, website and retailer stores. 

But currently, we are seeking to find a way to have more exposure to our brand.

Q6. Collaborations with other people or future plans

A:

SURI has collaborated with local brand ‘Tarik Jeans’ last year. 

We are looking to do more collaborations with brands alike next year.

SURI also provides sewing skills services for corporate employees that seek to learn.

The future goals for SURI are viewed in two manners which are:

  • The social impact of our beneficiaries in which we would like to expand to other community of underprivileged/ B40 mothers outside of Klang to build a ‘cottage industry’ whereby each community are specialized in certain product development.
  • To have more exposure to our brand in general.

Q9. Challenges they faced since SURI was first established

A:

As a social enterprise, we struggled in balancing out the aspect of our social work and the business side of things. 

As we really pushed on our social mission, we neglected the business aspect of things.

Q10. What do you want people to know about SURI?

A:

SURI is NOT an NGO but rather is a social-driven business that empowers the underprivileged community of mothers. 

As people have the wrong indication that we are a non-profit organization in which are not.

Q11. How can SURI contribute back to the community?

A:

Through the employment of the community of underprivileged/ B40 mothers with adequate living wages.
